PROGRAMMING
Creating In “the Global Dance Capital”
The Ballet Salon is proud to collaborate with New York’s leading dance artists who bring a wealth of professional experience, expertise, and passion to our programming. By bridging the gap between the professional dance community in NYC and returning dancers who may have lost their community in adulthood, we are committed to creating a vibrant ecosystem for the arts in "the Global Dance Capital".
Our program is anchored by professionally taught weekly company class, monthly salons, visiting artist nights, and the opportunity to learn choreography and perform through the Choreography Incubator.
Today, we have cultivated a community of dancers who are thinking of their return to ballet as a full and thoughtful creative practice that is in collaboration and dialogue with performing and visual artists, dance educators, choreographers and creative partners.
TRAINING
Our dancers are trained by some of New York's most talented performing artists. Lead by our Resident Teacher, we approach our dancers' return to ballet with care, integrity, and a love of the art form. Our weekly company classes grow with our dancers, starting the season at beginner/intermediate level and progressing to a intermediate/advance level class by the end of 8 months. Our Resident Teacher creates classes that are a space to re-fall in love with movement, reconnect with your body, and be surrounded by supportive familiar faces each week. We encourage dancers to "come as you are" even as that may fluctuate every class and work week.
EXPLORING ARISTRY
Our monthly Artist Salons are a chance to gather together outside of the ballet studio and create a shared space for inspiration, exchange of ideas, and conversation. These gatherings feature inspiring guest speakers– professionals exploring ballet through lenses such as writing, academia, and activism. These salons are not only a way to connect further with each other, but also a way to celebrate the many ways in which the art form of ballet can continue to inform our work, creative practices and critical thinking.
In the spirit of the artist salons of 19th century Europe, we also open the doors of our studios each month to New York-based visual artists to create with us during select company classes. For many visual artists, The Ballet Salon is often their first experience collaborating with live dancers. These cultural exchanges fuel the ecosystem of The Ballet Salon producing new works of photography, drawing, and design.
CREATING TOGETHER
Mid-way through the season is The Ballet Salon's Choreography Incubator! We invite three professional choreographers to make unique works on the participating dancers of The Ballet Salon, which are then performed at a live show in the Fall. Our final show celebrates the choreography, conversations, and projects our dancers and collaborating artists have created together during the season.
